Balls of Fire

Part 6 ~ 24 June 2025

Played: 17 March 2025

It's been a week in Better-than-Sniffers land!¹ And by coincidence, it's about now that I hit 100 days in-game. I may not be keeping pace with the pro mine-tubers, but I reckon things are going pretty swell. Elaville's villager population is up to 30 (mostly in the breeder storage... I'll get around to it, okay!), I'm on Efficiency 4 tools and Protection 4 gear, I have eight of the eleven cats, and I'm still sitting pretty on zero deaths! That record goes on the line today though as I venture into the spooky depths of Minecraft Hell.

A minecraft inventory including enchanted diamond armour and tools, as well as an enchanted gold helmet.

Oh boy, did Minecraft Hell deliver. I was immediately greeted by a ghast fireball that flew right through my portal. It's the dreaded soul sand valley spawn D: I swiftly shot down the screaming beast and boxed in the portal with cobble. Hey, it still beats being hunted by wild boar in the crimson forest XD

A cobblestone structure in a soul sand valley biome.

With that taken care of, I made my way over to the fortress, conveniently already in view to the southwest – did I mention this seed is incredible? This fortress actually forms a useful bridge over a body of lava, unlike so many I've seen that are more like a series of high-dive platforms, or just buried in the terrain. Anyway, I crossed the bridge to the nearest blaze spawner and engaged in some scorching hot combat. Yowch!

A minecraft player, on fire, fighting two blazes at a blaze spawner.

I then promptly went back to base, forgetting to grab the nether wart I needed for brewing. Dangit Ela, how many servers have you played on and you still make this mistake! Oh well, it's not far. And hey, the fortress has super low spawn rates thanks to the nether wastes full of zombie piglins. Also, the farthest extent of the fortress connects to the warped forest, so I harvested it for ender pearls. We didn't beat the game in 100 days, but 200 is looking promising!

A nether fortress in nether wastes, with warped forest in the background.

Finally, since the terrain around my portal is practically ideal for it – I went ahead and popped Sniper Duel :D

A soul sand valley with nether portal enclosed in cobblestone. The player has just gained the "Sniper Duel" advancement.
  1. As of the date of this post, the world and playthrough are now officialy titled Indigo Empire – though I maintain that my setup is better than sniffers, and will continue to make references to such :P
