Q & A

  • Q: WHY?
  • A: I'm obsessed with Minecraft and want to info dump about it on the internet. :)
  • Q: Why an indie website and not Youtube?
  • A: I don't trust Google/Alphabet, I don't want my voice and face getting used by AI, and I don't want to get dragged into the Youtube algorithm game.
  • Q: Why play as another character and not "Lemming"?
  • A: I've played as Lemming on other worlds. With a Lemmings skin and everything. Lemming (the Minecraft character) is a rodent, not a human. I want to play as a human character on this world. I'm hoping the roleplay provides some good representation and exploration of identity :)
  • Q: Why play on 1.19 and not the latest version?
  • A: Stacker mod (the one that lets me stack items past 64) is only updated to 1.19. I don't value the features of 1.20+ enough to update and lose that (see below for this and more controversial takes!) Also it means I don't have to update the world, update mods, generate new chunks for new features and all that.
  • Q: Why use so many "cheaty" mods?
  • A: I treat this game as a creative sandbox, not a competitive challenge. I work a day job and do this as a hobby. Ultimately what these mods do is save me TIME, whether it be collecting materials, managing inventory, enchanting gear, or securely spawnproofing an area. Without the mods, I wouldn't get nearly as much done, and it's likely I'd lose my momentum and consequently my motivation to play.
  • Q: Lemming – you're using an awful lot of em dashes in your writing – isn't that a telltale sign of AI-generated content??
  • A: That's not an em dash (Alt-0151), it's an *en dash* (Alt-0150)! I used to write reports for a job, en dashes were part of the style, and the habit stuck XD
  • Q: Why Georgia font?
  • A: It's what Age of Empires II uses in its in-game chat! (At least in the original version.) I get a nostalgic buzz whenever I see it :)
  • --Warning: You are being attacked by Edward Longshanks!!!--
  • Q: You like Pokémon? What's your favourite??
  • A: Mudkip! I herd u liek them :D
  • Q: Your post has tomorrow's date on it! Are you a time traveller?
  • A: New Zealand sits just west of the International Date Line, in the GMT+12 time zone. Depending where you are in the world, that could be up to 22 hours ahead of you (Aloha, Hawaii!). From October til April we jump ahead ANOTHER hour to +13. So essentially, yes, I'm posting from the FUTURE! If it's any consolation, if you're reading this on a Sunday, I'm probably working XD
  • Q: Why wait three months before starting a website?
  • A: Playing and enjoying the game is more important :D Also it took me a while to decide where and how to build a site. ALSO also, having a backlog is good, otherwise it's too tempting to start forcing inauthentic content (I've made THAT mistake before...)
  • Q: What's your opinion on [insert contentious Minecraft topic]?
  • A: This will be its own section on the site in due course :P For now here's a teaser...
    • Elytra is FUN and I use it at every opportunity. Yes it warps your perspective of the Minecraft world, yes the other transport modes suck by comparison, but to me those aren't a flaw of the elytra. It's part of the game's progression and I've adjusted my game plan accordingly.
    • Mending is GOOD and I put it on everything ASAP. It's just, I dunno, nice to not have to remake all my gear?
    • Shields are FINE. They have to negate damage, otherwise they're worthless. I will concede that the durability is too high for a wooden plank though, so they could lower that but add an option (material upgrade and/or enchant) to improve it up to or above the current level.
    • The combat update was a VAST improvement, BUT with a harsh learning curve that wasn't handled well. Specifically, attack cooldowns need to be communicated better.
    • Beds should work like they did in Beta, where a mob attacks you if your bed is in the open. The mechanic needs to ACTUALLY WORK though! They implemented it in a buggy state where a skeleton would spawn in your totally enclosed house, and then they gave up on it and switched to the current system where you can just sleep unless "there are monsters nearby". If you're in a space where you're safe to wait out the 10 minutes, you should be able to sleep.
    • KeepInventory is GOOD and more people should use it. Dying and losing your stuff in Minecraft is one of the BIGGEST "Quit Moments" (Josh Strife Hayes has a great video on this!) in all of gaming. If you lost so much investment that you gave up on the game... weren't you effectively playing Hardcore mode?
    • Old Minecraft was NOT better. It's totally just nostalgia. I can confidently say this because I was already an adult when the game was first created. D:
    • This may be my single spiciest take: The newest version isn't the best! My personal opinion is that the game peaked in 1.19. The trial chambers are fun, sure, but OMG that loot is a grind. Other than that, I feel like most additions in 1.20+ are either bloat (archaeology especially) or a straight downgrade (netherite templates and raid bottles). Basically my feeling on updates nowadays is "wake me up when they release the End Update" XD
