404: Solid Ground Not Found
14 March 2026
I made a 404 page for the site! This is something I've been wanting to do since the Under Construction post, but didn't manage at the time. You see, I had a specific vision for the page, but I needed a little modded magic to bring it to life. A vision from the halcyon days of 2011, when Minecraft was in Beta!
The iconic 404 seed. If you're unfamiliar, this is a world from Beta minecraft with a gravel beach that collapses in when you touch it. Beneath the beach is a vast network of caves to get lost in. And, miraculously, you can ride a water stream all the way down to diamond level from the surface. There's a whole challenge mode associated with this, but I'm a wimp so I just explored it in Peaceful and left the serious gaming to the Youtubers!
At first, I thought I'd have to somehow downgrade my game to Beta, or otherwise "acquire" a Beta version. But, as I recently found out, the modding community has come through! So I grabbed the Modern Beta mod, spun up a new instance in MultiMC, and booted it up. And then remembered to install Fabric on the new instance, after I started a world and got modern terrain. (I'm still a bit of a noob with the launcher...)
In case you're curious, I found out a couple of things about the seed:
- If you plug the 404 seed into modern versions, you spawn in a huge bamboo jungle. There's two jungle temples nearby!
- The location of the famous gravel patch (roughly -25x/20z) now lies on the border of the bamboo jungle and a river.
- The caves below are now lush caves for miles around! The version of Modern Beta I used actually generated lush cave features in the 404 cave, which was hilarious and not at all in keeping with the challenge lol.
So yeah. That was my nostalgic visit to the 404 beach. If you wanna see the new page, click here! Or, you know, type in anything under my domain that doesn't lead to an actual page :P
